At one point in Far Cry Instincts life span there was a famous mapper that was held high as the maker of many many visually stunning maps. Everyone would flock to the maps to shower the creator with compliments on looks and beauty in his maps. But no one ever mentioned how great the game flow was – because it wasn’t. It seemed at the time that maps were being made to be either: a) Rough looking but with good gameflow, or b) Visually stunning but devoid of gameflow. Cuchuliann was the way in which Sugarm0mma and I proved that the two do not have to be mutually exclusive. You can have your beautiful map AND play it too.
Here was the idea, show how beauty can be achieved in a map through the use of simplistic design and pure gameflow. Basically, try to make a map visually attractive without resorting to the old “Two Palms and a Rock” method of decorating a map. To this end Cuchuliann has almost no tree use and is a wide open space. Two large bases face off against each other across a small mountain valley. The oppressive mountains that frame the map have often been pointed out as the map’s best feature, giving the map that Western European feel of the Highlands of the United Kingdom – ergo the map being named after a prominent Celtic King and Hero (for more on Cuchuliann and his heroic exploits read: Táin Bó Cúailnge found at your local library). The simple pathing back and forth allow for ease of travel by ATV, and helps to direct the action.
Cuchuliann plays very well no matter the gamemode and has been a favorite of Sugarm0mma and myself since we made it together in Instincts years ago. If you are able to get some time on this map then gather a few friends, 10 at the most, and prepare for an excellent action packed round of Far Cry in one of the best team made maps from Sugarm0mma and Maxprey.
